Immunosuppressant Medications
Azathioprine: (Imuran) This medication is given to prevent rejection of the new lungs. Azathioprine must be taken every day for the rest of his life. This medication is to be taken once each day, in the evening. Red blood cells and white blood cells are monitored and occasionally the dose may need to be adjusted by the transplant team.
Prednisone: This medication is given to prevent rejection of the new lungs. This medication must be taken daily, for the rest of his life. Most people take prednisone in the morning with food.
Tacrolimus: (Prograf) This medication is given to prevent rejection and must be taken every day at 9 AM and 9 PM. Kent will take this medication for the rest of his life. The dose of this drug will change often because the transplant team monitors blood levels of the medication. It is important to keep track of daily dosage amounts.
Antibiotics
Septra DS: (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) This medication prevents infection in the new lungs.
Antifungals
Mycelex Troche: This mediation is taken twice daily to prevent thrush, a yeast infection that could develop in the mouth, throat, and on the tongue. This fungus could develop due to the immunosuppressant medications that must be taken to prevent rejection of the new lungs.
Valcyte: (Valganciclovir) This medication treats and prevents a viral infection from CMV (cytomegalovirus).
Other Medications
Ranitidine: (zantac) This medication controls acid secretion in the stomach.
Mag-Ox: This medication replaces magnesium losses from Prograf of Neoral.
